John Small
Media Producer & Designer
From an early age, I was always drawn towards creative arts. Never a big reader, I was drawn towards the bright lights and flashy colors of television and movies. I didn’t want to read a story … I wanted to see it. Show me. Tell me. When asked , “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, my friends replied, Doctors! Lawyers! Firefighters! All of which supremely respectable pursuits, which may make them better people than me. Who knows. But I replied I wanted to work in television and I didn’t know much more than that. I now work for my local television station, and am loving every minute of it.
This site is a jumping off point for me. My passions extend beyond the television screen and into other creative fields. I just love to be creative and I love to contribute. The work included on this site is just a taste of what I’ve done, and a reminder to never settle and to keep pushing myself.
Background
I am currently a Promotions Producer for Comcast NBCUniversal’s owned & operated affiliate (NBC & Telemundo Connecticut) in West Hartford, Connecticut. There, I work with the News, Sales, and Creative Services departments in developing, producing and editing high quality promotional materials, sales integrations, and content for broadcast and a variety of digital platforms. I also serve as the Senior Producer for the station’s award-winning children’s show “Kids Connection”. Prior to NBC Connecticut, I spent 4 years as a Promotions Producer for WTNH News 8 in New Haven, Connecticut.
Before entering the work force, I studied at Quinnipiac University. I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Journalism, and followed that up with a Master’s of Science in Interactive Media (UX Design) in 2018. While at school, I immersed myself in the student television station, along with taking opportunities to broadcast live sporting events.
The excitement of live event coverage, led me to accept an internship with Connecticut Public Television. Working for CPTV Sports, I worked Double-A baseball, local soccer, and even Little League World Series tournament broadcasts. This experience allowed me to continue pursuing freelance opportunities through Quinnipiac Athletics, working on productions for NESN and SNY. Not satisfied with just broadcast experience, I began to try my hand at graphic design, and loved that as well.
Now its been 9 years since I graduated and I am forever a student. I always take every opportunity to learn something new. New skills. New tricks. New ways of doing something. This has lead me to try even more. I co-directed an independent feature length documentary that went from Summer project to national award recognition and I have been responsible for projects of increasing complexity. With all the success, I stay focused on one thing. Continuing to improve, and loving what I do.
